Pizza

Photographing pizza is always fun. I thought I’d try Domino’s pizza for a change of pace. I hadn’t eaten there since probably the 1990s. This is a vegetarian thin crust with double cheese. I’m not sold on the way they cut their pizza, because it’s nice to have a ledge of crust to hold at all times. It’s a good, flavorful pizza though. The sauce is really savory.┬áThe crust is a little “flat” in flavor, but has a nice cracker like texture.

Remember the Chick-O-Stick?

These were one of the staples of my childhood small-town swimming pool concession stand, along with the likes of sweet tart lipsticks and candy necklaces. Things kids can run around with in full sun and they won’t melt or make a mess. I have no idea if they even make the full size Chick-O-Stick anymore, but I noticed these bite size snacks at Hobby Lobby.

I though I’d cut open a jelly donut to see what was inside.

There’s a story behind these donuts. Last week, I heard a knock at my front door. I open the door and there is my neighbor Jack. He is alarmed because directly to his left there’s a fountain in my yard that wasn’t there before. Turns out, the pipe that directs water into my house broke. Long story short, Jack helped me fix the problem and a few hours later, everything at the Amityville Horror House was back to relative normal. So to thank Jack for his help, I stopped by the donut shop up the street that he has raved about in the past to get him a gift certificate. While there, I thought, I have a food photography website that’s pretty much become a donut website. So I should snap some photos. But my first photos were on the dark side so I wasn’t happy with how they turned out. So I went back today to snap some new photos with better lighting.

If you’re in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, breakfast here might be the best part of your visit.

A Taste of Thai – Yellow Curry Rice

I’m not usually a big fan of “packaged” meals like rice and pasta, but this one is entirely different. There are a couple different “Taste of Thai” products such as coconut ginger rice and pad Thai, but this one is by far my favorite. It has just the right amount of spice/heat.

It tastes great as a dish alone. But I usually have a second fry pan going with things I like such as mushrooms, onions, “soy crumbles,” and chopped sweet peppers. Once the rice is cooked, I toss everything into one pan.

A box includes a packet of jasmine rice, a packet of powdery curry seasonings, and a clear packet of spicy paste. I used to divide the paste in half to knock the spicy level down a few notches. But I’ve built up my tolerance and now like it “full blast.” If you like spicy food, go for the full packet. A box costs about $4. Not cheap, but it’s so good I have it once a month or so.

I also keep a bottle of Bragg Liquid Aminos on my counter. This goes GREAT with many savory dishes like pasta, rice and potatoes. It’s basically the healthier version of soy sauce. You can find this at most grocery stores in the “natural” section, or at any health food store.

‘Twas the Night After Doomsday…

I discovered this cookie dough “ice cream” that’s dairy free. All of the flavor, half the guilt.

Chicken McNuggets and Onion Rings (Sort Of)

dIMG_1781

dIMG_1777

I hadn’t had McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets since probably the 1990s. I knew there are “meat free” versions of these types of nuggets at local grocers, so I tried them. These are baked in the oven, so they aren’t fried. They actually are a pretty tasty snack. They aren’t greasy, have a nice crunch and go great with dipping sauces. I threw in a few rings so I could make my own “sampler platter.”

I keep telling people, there are substitutes for practically everything that’s bad for you. And many of these actually taste as good as the bad versions! These could totally fool anyone into believing they’re the real deal.
